She focuses her work on improving the design and safety of our nations roadways by providing technical assistance, training and technology deployment of proven safety countermeasures. Hillary is currently a Senior Roadway Safety Engineer and Team Leader with the FHWA, Resource Center, Safety and Design National Technical Service Team. She specializes in the safety and design local and rural roadways and roundabouts. Hillary is a Professional Engineer, a National Highway Institute Certified Instructor, the 2019 FHWA Engineer of the Year and has her BS, MS and PhD in Civil Engineering. Hillary is the Secretary for the TRB Committee on Roundabouts, past Member of the TRB Committee on Geometric Design, and past Chair of the ITE Roundabout Task Force. Nathan Belz (Associate Professor @University of Alaska Fairbanks) Nathan Belz is an associate professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Assistant Director of the Center for Safety Equity in Transportation, and Director of the Transportation Research and Printables (TRAP) Lab. His primary research interest is how and why people make the transportation choices that they do and the implications for safety and efficiency of our roadways. He also serves as Committee Research Coordinator for the TRB Committee on Roundabouts and Alternative Intersections, member of the TRB Committee on Native American Transportation Issues and the UAF Honors Faculty Advisory Council, and the UAF Community Garden Committee. Nathan is an avid cyclist, forager, and hobby farmer. He spends much of his free time enjoying the wilderness and wonderful trails that Alaska has to offer with his fiancee and four-legged adventure comrades, Teal, Hatcher, and Flynn. Pamela Golden (Northern Region Traffic & Safety Engineer @Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities) A graduate of Georgia Tech, Pam has worked in engineering for over 20 years. She fell in love with traffic engineering when she had an opportunity to move into the field at the Idaho Transportation Department nearly 15 years ago. Eager to raise her young family in Alaska, she joined the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities as the Northern Region Traffic and Safety Engineer in 2011. She is responsible for the oversight of the region’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, which focuses on reducing injury and fatal crashes. Now that her kids are driving, her passion for highway safety is stronger than ever. Since joining the Department, Pam has initiated around 40 Highway Safety Improvement Projects for both urban and rural roadways in Alaska.
