How do changes in U.S. immigration detention capacity influence interior immigration enforcement in the surrounding region? What can we expect to happen to enforcement rates if a detention center closes, opens, or expands? Using records obtained via the Freedom of Information Act and other sources, we have assembled national-level panel data for the period from October 2015 through June 2019. We will discuss our project workflow, give an overview of the characteristics and challenges of the data, and share preliminary results of statistical modeling using two-way fixed effects and difference-in-differences approaches.
